Grassy Hollow Visitor Center

Known for its winter snowshoe hikes and educational summer programs, Grassy Hollow Visitor Center offers plenty to do for the outdoor enthusiast.

Between Memorial and Labor Day weekends, guests can learn more about the local landscape through such weekly programs as “Hug a Tree,” which explains what to do when you’re lost in the mountains; to “Astronomy in the Angeles,” where you’ll learn more about astronomy research in the Angeles National Forest. Additional programs include talks on local birds, snakes, plants, geology, reptiles and animals.

Many free guided hikes are also offered by the center’s naturalists, including jaunts along the Pacific Crest Trail, Lightning Ridge, and the San Andreas Fault.

One of the biggest highlights is the campfire program featuring “Old Miner Vincent,” which is followed the next day with a hike to his primitive cabin in the Sheep Mountain Wilderness. Be sure to pack your own snacks, water and appropriate shoes for each hike. Snowshoe hikes are offered in the winter.
